VOLVO S80
Volvo designed its S80 to compete with the big boys of luxury at Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The ultimate S80 is the Executive model, which gets an extra 1.9 inches of rear legroom within the same body shell by pushing the rear seat further back into the hat shelf and removing the folding-seat mechanism. The rear doors also open wider to ease entry and exit. Inside are two heavily padded and heated seats and a DVD player with a video screen in the rear console. An Elite model offers the added legroom with a three-seater bench and no DVD. All S80s are powered by one of two in-line-six engines: a 197-hp, naturally aspirated 2.9-liter or a 268-hp, twin-turbo 2.8-liter. The luxurious S80 handles less sharply than its German rivals, but there’s plenty of power. New this year is On-Call Plus, which can summon emergency services via both cellular and direct satellite communication.
