TOYOTA TACOMA
The Tacoma, the sixth generation of Toyota’s basic small truck, is unchanged for 2003, but for anti-lock brakes becoming standard equipment. Two years ago a four-door Double Cab model was added—a wise move on Toyota’s part, since Nissan, Chevy, Dodge, and Ford had all been offering four-door compact pickup trucks for several years. The Tacoma was modestly redesigned for 2001, getting a taller hood and different grille and headlights. The Tacoma offers two four-cylinder engines, as well as a 190-hp, 3.4-liter V-6. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. An off-road package is available. The rear-drive PreRunner has the look of the 4x4 but not the price, and the S-Runner sport-truck model has the V-6 as standard and a sport-tuned suspension. This is an excellent small truck, but its price tag is big compared with the domestics.
