TOYOTA ECHO
Toyota’s subcompact Echo continues to provide excellent fuel economy, high utility, and a low base price, but there are some significant changes for 2003. The car’s overall length has been increased by 1.6 inches, divided equally between front and rear. Exterior alterations include new front and rear bumpers, grille, headlamps, taillamps, and trunklid, and optional 15-inch wheels. A new optional Appearance package adds fender flares and a rear spoiler, and another new package includes power windows and door locks. Fog lamps are a stand-alone option beginning in January. Inside, the 2003 Echo gets new fabric colors and patterns, and an optional Chrome package is available to further brighten the look. The Echo’s handling is only adequate, but acceleration is decent. Go easy on the options, though: At $14,000 or so, the Echo quickly loses its economy-car status.
