TOYOTA CELICA
After a complete redesign in 2000, the Toyota Celica remained unchanged for two years. For 2003 it undergoes some modest alterations. Its exterior look has been updated a bit by changes to the front fascia and taillamps. Ditto for the interior, which receives a JBL audio system, new instrument faces, and other cosmetic touches, including color scheme changes. Celica is pleasantly powered by a high-tech 1.8-liter DOHC four with variable valve timing. The 140-hp GT lacks this, but the GT-S, which has it, puts out 180 hp. The base gearbox is a five-speed manual—the GT-S has a six-speed—and a four-speed automatic is optional. The front buckets are comfortable and supportive, and the fighter-plane dashboard is very cool. A little more elbow room would be nice, though. We like the Celica’s lively responses, aggressive styling, and precise steering.
