TOYOTA CAMRY
The Camry has been America’s bestselling car since 1997. In the hope of maintaining that position, Toyota introduced an all-new, fifth-generation version in 2002. Bigger than before, this Camry has a soft look, with a low, rounded aero nose and a high tail. Its drag coefficient has been reduced from 0.30 to a commendable 0.28, and the car’s ride is comfortable and quiet. A smooth 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission are also new but a carry-over 3.0-liter V-6 is available. Three trim levels are offered: LE, SE, and XLE. All can be had with the four- or six-cylinder engine, but a five-speed manual comes with four-cylinder LE and SE models only. With the five-speed, the SE looks to be the performer of the lot. Toyota promises a 0-to-60 time of 9.1 seconds from the 157-hp powerplant. All that’s new for 2003 is the option of power-adjustable pedals.
