PONTIAC AZTEK
Shorn of its gray lower-body cladding, the Aztek looks a little less weird for 2003, and there are some detail updates that may improve its appeal even more. For example, a new DVD entertainment system joins the option list, as does XM satellite radio, and a tire-inflation monitor becomes standard on all but the base model. The Aztek is roughly based on the Montana minivan and is basically a front-driver with GM’s minivan powertrain, a 3.4-liter pushrod V-6 and four-speed automatic, with the option of the Versatrak all-wheel-drive system which comes with an independent rear suspension. The Aztek’s two-ton curb weight limits its performance: 0 to 60 in 10.8 seconds, braking from 70 mph takes 212 feet, and its modest ground clearance (6.7 inches) limits off-road use. However, its so-so dynamics are balanced by attractive pricing and clever cargo versatility.
