NISSAN ALTIMA
The third-generation Altima was introduced as an “all-new” model in 2002 and immediately became a hot seller, breathing new life into a company that was in danger of becoming moribund. For the 2003 model year, several minor enhancements have been made to the interior, and the option packages have been simplified. The Altima is available with either a 175-hp four-cylinder engine or an optional 3.5-liter V-6, both with dual-exhaust tailpipes. Although the base four is an adequate engine, we prefer the V-6, which tows this car around with authority, providing effortless low-end response and intense urge as the tach climbs above 5000 rpm. Handling is equally competent thanks to a strut front suspension, a multilink rear suspension, and generous wheel and tire packages. This is the first Altima in years that can challenge the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
