MITSUBISHI GALANT
Something of an oddball in the middle price range when it debuted in 1999, the Mitsubishi Galant evolved into a good-looking four-door with above-average performance thanks to the introduction of an optional 195-horsepower V-6 in 2000. The base engine, a 140-hp 2.4-liter four and the V-6 come with a four-speed automatic transmission only. Four trim levels are offered: the base DE, the value ES, the upscale LS, and the sporty GTZ. An optional Sun and Sound package for the ES model is new for 2003, adding an Infinity audio system with seven speakers, a power sunroof, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The ashtray and cigarette lighter are now a dealer-installed accessory rather than standard equipment. We like Galant’s well-rounded mix of contemporary styling, better-than-expected performance, and more-than-generous interior room and trunk space.
