MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE
The naturally aspirated, front-drive Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe comes with one of two engines: a 147-hp, 2.4-liter four in RS (base) and GS models and a 3.0-liter V-6 for the GT and GTS. Either engine can be attached to a five-speed manual or four-speed Sportronic transmission. A GT with a five-speed will go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds—a bit slower than the old turbo used to do—but the higher comfort level and increased refinement was, for the most part, worth the trade-off in straight-line oomph. For 2003 the V-6 gets a 5-hp boost, going from 205 horsepower to 210 via Mitsubishi’s variable induction management system that electronically adjusts itself to maximize power output. Other changes for 2003 include various exterior and interior modifications, 17-inch alloy wheels for all models but the RS, slightly altered option packages, and two new exterior colors.
