MERCURY MOUNTAINEER
The Mountaineer was all-new for 2002 and looked it. In the past, it was nearly identical to the Ford Explorer, from which it derives. But the new Mountaineer has a far more distinctive style which Mercury describes as being inspired by “modern architecture.” Whatever, it certainly doesn’t look like anything else on the road. Still, beneath its angular sheetmetal, the Mountaineer remains the same as the Explorer, sharing its new independent suspension and powertrain (see Ford Explorer for details). The Mountaineer is available in rear-wheel-drive form, but if you opt for four-wheel drive you get a full-time, fully automatic system, which is not shared with the Explorer. For 2003, there are more standard features (including power-adjustable pedals) and options, such as a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, as well as the usual minor interior and exterior changes.
