JAGUAR X-TYPE
The X-type is the most recent step in Fordifying Jaguar. It is based on the second-generation European Ford Mondeo, but Jaguar engineers greatly upgraded the chassis, abandoning the Mondeo’s front-wheel-drive layout in favor of a four-wheel-drive system. Propelling this chassis are two versions of the all-aluminum Jaguar AJ V-6, a 3.0-liter developing 227 hp and a 2.5-liter with 192 hp. Both use drive-by-wire throttles to better integrate with the cruise control and the optional stability-control system. Both engines are available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The interior is pure Jaguar, expertly crafted in sumptuous Connolly leather and bird’s-eye maple wood trim on the dashboard and doors. Of course, luxury amenities abound. For 2003 X-types with the 3.0-liter get added standard equipment.
