HONDA INSIGHT
Though it’s unchanged for 2003, Honda’s brilliant gasoline-electric hybrid continues to hold the top two spots on the EPA fuel-economy charts. The standard version, with a five-speed manual, is Number One, with ratings of 61 mpg city, 68 highway, followed closely by the CVT version at 57/56. CVT stands for continuously variable transmission, a stepless automatic option (about $1000) added last year. The Insight’s secret: low weight (under 2000 pounds), aero efficiency (0.25 Cd), and Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)—a 10-kilowatt electric motor sandwiched between the 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine and the transmission. The motor adds its thrust to the engine’s 67 hp for acceptable go power: 10.5 seconds to 60 mph. When it’s not boosting acceleration, the motor recharges the batteries. Another distinction: This is one hybrid that’s a blast to drive.
