HONDA CR-V
The first-generation CR-V was one of the most practical of the small sport-utilities. And so is its successor, which came on the scene in 2002 and remains essentially unchanged for 2003. It’s powered by a 160-hp, 2.4-liter four-banger that’s smoothed out with a pair of balance shafts and liquid-filled engine mounts. It scoots to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, and, with disc brakes all around, it can stop from 70 mph in 192 feet. On the road, the CR-V is nimble, with a ride that’s firm but rarely choppy, and beyond 50 mph the steering locks onto straight ahead like a smart bomb. In addition to a full complement of standard features, it has such clever items as a fold-out picnic table. With typically excellent Honda build quality, and one of the best instrument panel layouts around, this is a guilt-free SUV that can deliver loads of utility along with 20-mpg-plus fuel economy.
