FORD EXCURSION
This may well be the last year for the gigantic Excursion, which has come to be regarded as a scapegoat for all large SUVs. This is a truck—pure, simple. The Excursion is bigger in every dimension than the Chevrolet Suburban, and it can weigh nearly four tons. Of course it can also carry a ton or tow 10. Based on the Super Duty pickup truck, the Excursion has a stiff ride and poor handling even by the low standards of the class. The Suburban easily beats it on-road. The big news for later this year is the addition of a new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel with electronic variable response turbocharging and direct injection, good for 550 pound-feet of torque. A new five-speed automatic accompanies the diesel, which will replace the 7.3-liter diesel. There’s also a new Eddie Bauer trim package, and revisions to the shocks and rear anti-roll bar are said to improve ride.
