DODGE INTREPID
Redesigned in 1998, the Intrepid receives mostly trim changes for the 2003 model year, including new exterior colors, new optional 16-inch chrome wheels, and other detail updates. The Intrepid R/T has been dropped from the lineup; the SXT package now supplying leadfoots with some hi-zoot styling tweaks and a 244-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. The Intrepid’s base engine remains the 200-hp, 2.7-liter DOHC V-6 from the Stratus. Although the Intrepid is 5.4 inches shorter than the Concorde, it is still a big car with vast interior volume. The second-generation Intrepid does a far better job of damping out expansion-joint impacts and noise than its predecessor, and the most-supple version of this car is also the least expensive. The long wheelbase means the Intrepid doesn’t handle as well as others, but it trades some dynamic shortcomings for occupant comfort.
