DODGE DURANGO
Largest (and oldest) of the so-called mid-size sport-utilities, the Durango is based on a much-modified Dakota pickup frame and is available with either part-time four-wheel drive—the kind preferred by off-roaders—or optional full-time four-wheel drive, which is preferred by everyone else. Perhaps the biggest thing that keeps this SUV a top seller in its class is roominess. The Durango offers an optional third-row seat that will accommodate two adults in relative comfort. An optional 245-hp, 5.9-liter pushrod V-8 allows a 7550-pound towing capacity. For 2003 the Durango has standard four-wheel disc brakes and comes in two new colors: Timberland Green and Light Almond. The Durango is feeling its age against the Ford Explorer and Chevy TrailBlazer, but if space and towing capacity are high on the priority list, it’s still worth considering.
