DODGE DAKOTA
Biggest of the so-called compact pickups—its dimensions straddle the territory between full-size and compact pickups—the Dakota was redesigned in 1997 to look more like the full-size Ram. It became even more like its larger counterpart with the addition of the Quad Cab model, which added four front-hinged doors to the Dakota’s choices in 2000. For 2003 the base 120-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder is gone. The entry-level engine becomes the popular 175-hp, 3.9-liter V-6. Eight-cylinder power options include a 235-hp, 4.7-liter SOHC V-8 and the 250-hp, 5.9-liter V-8 that powers the hot-rod Dakota R/T. A five-speed automatic is a new transmission choice for the 4.7-liter V-8. Regular-cab and Club Cab Dakotas can now be ordered with a Stampede package that includes color-keyed body moldings, 16-by-8-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear anti-roll bar.
