Overview

Introduction:
In recent years, Chrysler has worked diligently to improve the quality of the Sebring line, and its efforts have not been wasted. If you''re looking for a stylish midsize sedan or convertible with performance to match its looks, don''t overlook the Sebring. It last received a major overhaul in 2001, and has since become a less expensive alternative to its Japanese competitors; Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima.

If you like the Mitsubishi Eclipse but need more passenger room, take a look at the Sebring coupe. Built at the same plant that produces the Eclipse and the Galant, this Sebring shares many mechanical and interior components with those Mitsus. This means a choice of either a 2.4-liter inline four (142 horsepower) or a 3.0-liter V6 (200 horses) and a sporty cockpit similar to that of the Eclipse.

Chrysler is serious about improving its standing in the ultracompetitive midsize segment, and the fruits of its labors are obvious in this trio of attractive and well-designed Sebrings.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options:
The Sebring comes in sedan, coupe and convertible body styles. The coupe offers two trim levels -- Base and Limited. Base coupes come well equipped with air conditioning, power windows, a four-disc CD changer, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel and 16-inch wheels. Limited trim adds an Infinity audio system with satellite steering wheel controls, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel and four-wheel disc brakes. Sedans come in base, Touring and Limited trim. Base and Touring models are similarly equipped with standard features like air conditioning, a CD stereo, cruise control and power windows, locks and mirrors. Limited trim adds foglights, a premium headliner with dual sunvisors, electroluminescent gauges, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, eight-way power driver seat and trip computer. The Sebring convertible comes in four trims: base, GTC, Touring and Limited. Standard amenities include air conditioning and a six-speaker stereo.

Powertrains and Performance:
Both the Sebring sedan and convertible offer two engines: a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder rated at 150 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.7-liter V6 with 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. For the sedan, both engines are available only with a four-speed automatic transmission; the convertible offers a five-speed manual option with the V6 engine in GTC trim. The coupe features a 2.4-liter inline four that stirs 147 horses and 158 lb-ft of twist, and a 3.0-liter V6 that generates 200 hp and 205 lb-ft of torque. The Sebring coupe may be had with either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.

For more Performance data, see Edmunds'' Specifications page.

Safety:
Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on the Limited convertible and optional on all other Sebrings. Side curtain airbags are optional on the coupe and sedan. In NHTSA frontal impact crash testing, the Sebring sedan netted an impressive five out of five stars for both the driver and front passenger. In side-impact testing, the sedan earned three stars for the front and rear. The Sebring convertible rated three stars for the driver and front passenger side in NHTSA frontal impact tests; in side-impact testing, it scored three stars in front and four in the rear. In 40-mph frontal offset crash testing by the IIHS, the sedan picked up an "Acceptable" rating (the second highest of four). Finally, the Sebring coupe earns four stars from the NHTSA regarding both driver and passenger-side frontal impact testing.

For more Safety information, see Edmunds'' Safety page.

Interior Design and Special Features:
All three Sebring body styles offer spacious interiors with straightforward controls and solid construction. Most of the interior materials look better than they feel, but the overall design is clean and functional. The convertible is one of the few drop tops on the market that can seat four comfortably, while both the sedan and coupe offer at least 16 cubic feet of space in the trunk.

For more Interior Features information, see Edmunds'' Specifications page.

Driving Impressions:
The Sebring''s available powertrains deliver adequate power for most driving situations, but with comparable coupes and sedans offering well over 200 horsepower, the Sebring pales in comparison. The coupe and sedan offer respectable handling, but the convertible is better suited to less enthusiastic cruising.
