CHEVROLET CAVALIER
The most affordable Chevrolet gets a front and rear freshening for 2003, along with feature upgrades: side-impact airbags and a 60/40 split folding rear seatback. GM’s OnStar system joins the option list on LS and LS Sport models, while XM satellite radio is available across the board. GM’s new 140-hp, Ecotec DOHC 16-valve 2.2-liter aluminum four-cylinder becomes the only Cavalier engine. The wheezy old 2.2-liter four and 150-hp V-6 have been dropped, as has the sporty Z24. The simplified 2003 lineup includes base, LS, and LS Sport models in two- and four-door body styles. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, and a four-speed automatic is optional. Chevy is also offering a range of new accessories, such as bike racks, cargo carriers, CD holders, and the like. It’s far from exciting, but the Cavalier continues to be a good basic transportation buy.
