CHEVROLET AVALANCHE
The Avalanche is based on GM’s full-size-truck frame and is part four-door pickup and part Suburban with the top rear portion cut off. In standard configuration it’s a six-passenger truck cab with a five-foot, three-inch cargo box. But by flipping some cleverly designed seats and panels the cargo box can be extended to more than eight feet. Though it’s not as revolutionary as Chevrolet would have us believe, it’s still an innovative amalgam of features and functions such as two lockable containers integrated into the rear quarter-panels, which provide five cubic feet of secure storage space. This truck is powered by a 285-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 and is available with Chevy’s optional multimode four-wheel-drive system. For 2003, the Avalanche is mostly unchanged but for some revised option packages, a redesigned instrument panel, a few mechanical upgrades, and a few new colors.
