CADILLAC ESCALADE
Brand-new in 2002, the second-generation Escalade is a far better vehicle than the one it replaced, which was little more than a rebadged Yukon Denali. This Caddy, with its bold, edgy styling and in-your-face grille, rides on GM’s excellent GMT 800 body-on-frame platform and, with four-wheel-drive, is powered by a 345-hp, 6.0-liter pushrod V-8 which can hustle the two-and-a-half-ton rig from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. Rear-drive editions use a 285-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 (325 pound-feet of torque). In keeping with Cadillac tradition, the Escalade abounds with luxury features such as Zebrano wood trim, a superb sound system, and perforated “Nuance” leather. The Escalade is little changed for 2003, though there are a number of incremental mechanical improvements, a redesigned instrument panel, and some new options such as XM radio and a DVD system.
