Overview

Introduction:
Since its introduction in 1959, more than six million Buick LeSabres have been sold. Amassing such a loyal following isn''t easy, especially since Ford and Chrysler have formidable competitors of their own in both the enduring Crown Victoria and the well-regarded Concorde (succeeded this year by the all-new 300). When a car has such a history of longevity, redesigns are carefully orchestrated in the hopes of attracting new buyers, but without alienating their old fans. To that end, LeSabre last underwent a redesign in 2000, and only subtle styling changes were made. Evolutionary in style outside, and revolutionary in style inside, the LeSabre has met its designers'' goals: keep the good stuff and improve the rest. Fans of the previous-generation LeSabre will not be put off by the current iteration, now entering its sixth year of production. LeSabre uses an aircraft fuselage styling theme to achieve a look familiar to loyalists. Buick''s signature "waterfall" chrome grille is immediately recognizable, and the clean-looking front and rear fascias set off the clear-lens headlamps and large taillamps. Give Buick credit for acting on customer input and presenting a surprisingly competent overall package.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options:
The 2005 LeSabre is comprised of two models -- Custom and Limited. Custom includes the usual round of sedan basics, such as power windows, locks and mirrors; air conditioning; remote keyless entry; cruise control; tilt steering; a power driver seat; and an AM/FM stereo with CD player. The Limited adds side airbags, traction control, 16-inch aluminum wheels, rain-sensing wipers, the OnStar communication system, dual-zone automatic climate control and heated seats. Four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS are standard on both trim levels.

For more Style information, see Edmunds'' Compare Styles page.

Powertrains and Performance:
The only available powertrain in the LeSabre is the trusty 3.8-liter V6, which is mated to a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes a respectable 205 horsepower and manages to earn an EPA mileage rating of 20 city/29 highway. Acceleration is brisk for the most part, but a full load of passengers and luggage slows the sedan down considerably.

For more Performance data, see Edmunds'' Specifications page.

Safety:
Safety has also been an enduring LeSabre trait, and the 2005 LeSabre doesn''t disappoint. The model received high marks in crashworthiness from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), and was one of the IIHS''s "Best Picks" in the large family car class. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the LeSabre a perfect five stars for frontal impacts and four stars for side impacts, respectively. The LeSabre continues to offer OnStar, the 24-hour on-demand navigation and assistance service as standard equipment on the all models, along with the optional StabiliTrak stability control system and side airbags.

For more Safety information, see Edmunds'' Safety page.

Interior Design and Special Features:
Typical Buick buyers place a priority on comfort, and the LeSabre delivers. The front seats are wide, soft and flat, accommodating a large range of body types. Six-passenger seating is standard, while front buckets are available. As this is a full-size car, rear-seat occupants are equally taken care of. And even though legroom back there isn''t best in class, it is still comfortable for three adults. The trunk has a commendable 18-cubic-foot capacity.

For more Interior Features information, see Edmunds'' Specifications page.

Driving Impressions:
The LeSabre''s 3.8-liter V6 delivers smooth power and plenty of low-end torque for passing. The steering is well weighted and responsive, but doesn''t offer much feedback to the driver. The LeSabre handles the road well for a large sedan, but don''t expect anything more than a pleasant cruise behind the wheel.
